Look at our fantastic Kendama Cup and Ball Game, made from real wood, with a natural-looking stick and cups, and a red ball. The handle is the ‘ken’, the cups are ‘sarado’ and the ball is ‘tama’. The hole in the tama is the ‘ana’ and the spike at the tip of the stick is the ‘kensaki’. It is a traditional Japanese game for people of all ages. The idea is to use flick or movements with your hand to get the ball into the cups or to spear it on the point of the stick. That is why the ball has a hole in it. There are a huge number of techniques and methods of doing this, and playing is a great way to improve hand-eye coordination, balance, concentration and timing while also having fun. This Japanese version of cup and ball takes a lot of skill and is harder than you might think! There is some debate over when and where it originated but in general, it is said to have developed sometime in the 17th or 18th centuries. Its size and the materials used can vary, some plastic, some metal, but here we use a lovely wood. In Japan, there are kendama competitions all other with players performing an enormous number of combinations and tricks. There are no set rules to play but there are different grips to learn to perform different tricks.
